A little about Virg and his wood carving... My name is Virgil L. Butler, but my friends call me "Virg". Wood carving fish is my passion and I would like to share my experience with you. As a boy in central Indiana, I was a member of the local Boy Scout Club. Of all the merit badges I earned while working toward my Eagle rating, the woodcarving badge is the one that left the greatest impression on me. I went around carving everything I could find and this new found passion for wood carving quickly became a part of my first great passion, fishing. I would often “whittle” a fish out of sticks found on the banks of my favorite fishing holes while I waited for the monsters of the deep to take my bait. After boyhood, my carving took a back seat to life for a while, through military service, raising a family, etc. Several years ago I finally found time to return to wood carving again and spent the next few years exploring several types of wood carving, to include hand and power carving in many different styles and subjects and finally coming back to my favorite subject, the silent shadows of the deep…… fish. I’m still fishing and wood carving from the town I now call home, Council, Idaho, on my favorite boat with my good pal, Sockx, my dog. Sockx really gets impatient waiting for me to catch a nice fat trout or big ole’ bass for his close examination before going into the live well or back into the water from which it came. I am a self-taught wood carver and though I have been fortunate enough to capture some fine awards for my wood carving creations, I feel I have much more to learn. Life is good and I look forward to helping recreate your trophy catch or perhaps carve a custom piece of fish art for your home or cabin, and maybe share with you something I know about wood carving or just a good fishing story.
